A Conversation with Visual Artist Nelly Rizou

I recently had the opportunity to speak with visual artist and Fine Arts graduate, Ms. Nelly Rizou, regarding the advantages of painting for children. With her experience in guiding young little artists, she has observed how painting fosters creativity, emotional expression, and crucial developmental skills. Here are her insights.

Q: Why is painting important for children?

Nelly Rizou: Painting is a fantastic way for children to express their emotions, especially when they struggle to put their feelings into words. It supports emotional well-being, fosters creativity, and helps develop important skills. When children engage in artistic activities—whether alone or in groups—they learn cooperation, communication, and how to appreciate different perspectives.

Q: How does painting benefit a child’s development?

Nelly Rizou: There are so many benefits! First, it enhances fine motor skills. Using paintbrushes, sponges, or even their fingers strengthens hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Second, it improves concentration. Kids become fully immersed in their artwork, which helps them develop patience and focus. Most importantly, painting encourages children to be creative and to learn that in art there is no right or wrong.

Q: You believe art museums and exhibitions are important for kids. Why?

Nelly Rizou: Absolutely! Exposing children to different forms of art broadens their understanding of the world. Museums and galleries inspire creativity, boost critical thinking, and allow kids to observe different artistic styles. Looking at artwork helps children develop their own aesthetic sense while also nurturing a deep appreciation for creativity and culture.

Q: How can parents encourage painting at home? Do you have any practical tips?

Nelly Rizou: Definitely! Encouraging artistic expression at home is easy and fun. Here are some simple ways parents can get started:

  • Create a dedicated art space:

Even a small corner with paints, paper, and markers can inspire creativity.

  • Offer a variety of materials:

Let kids experiment with different tools—finger paints, chalk, crayons, watercolors, even sponges and cotton balls!

  • Incorporate painting into playtime:

Try themed prompts like “Paint your dream house” or do blindfold painting for a fun twist!

  • Find inspiration in daily life:

Encourage kids to paint scenes from their favorite stories, nature walks, or family outings.

  • Try unique painting surfaces:

Instead of paper, let them paint on rocks, seashells, fabric, cardboard boxes, or even windows with washable markers!

  • Be a role model:

Sit down and paint with your child. When they see you enjoying art, they’ll want to join in too! Don’t be afraid if it gets a bit messy, use an apron and enjoy!

  • Praise effort, not perfection:

Instead of saying, “That’s great!” try, “I love the colors you used!” or “Tell me about your painting.” This boosts confidence without comparison.

  • Display their artwork proudly:

Frame a few paintings, create an ‘art book,’ or hang their masterpieces on the fridge.

Q: Any final thoughts for parents?

Nelly Rizou: Painting is such a wonderful way for kids to explore their creativity, express themselves, and develop essential skills. Parents don’t need to be artists themselves—just provide encouragement, materials, and be open minded. Every child’s artwork is special, and with a little support, painting can become a lifelong passion!

Final Thoughts...

After my conversation with Ms. Nelly Rizou, I’m convinced that painting is one of the best activities for children. It’s more than just fun—it’s a gateway to self-expression, learning, and imagination. Let’s give our children the freedom to create, explore, and enjoy the beauty of art!
